Trees Will Destroy Singapore

I'm sure Singapore is proud of being a garden city. Unknowing to the authorities, trees actually causes more destruction than help to this little state country.

They planted millions of trees across the whole nation, in the name of beautifying the country, providing shade and so-called "cooling" the environment. Little do they know, their little plan failed miserable, only to bring out more harm than help.

Let's first talk about the beautification aspect. When foreigners, especially those from the west come to a country like Singapore, they would be amazed with how developed you are, not how much trees you have. If they are interested in nature and plants, they would have gone to Cambodia or Indonesia. In many Westerners' opinions, the east has always been a more.... rural place... Where most countries are not as well-developed. So instead of showing off how developed and advanced Singapore is, you guys get high sticking to the stereotype of a jungle?

Then we talked about temperature... JB, Malaysia has must lesser trees as compared to Singapore. I personally do not see a significant difference in how hot I feel when I am in JB and Singapore. Seriously, ask any sane persons, they will tell you, JB has the same temperature and humidity as Singapore. Does the government seriously think that by planting a few pathetic trees in this little island of theirs, they can change the entire climate of the region? Fat hope...

Now as for providing shade... It works in a way, but who stays outdoors anyway at 12 noon? Singapore is a small country with the 2nd highest population density in the world. There are buildings everywhere.... If you have some trees in the parks for shade and beauty purposes, that's excellent. But keep them IN the park!

Now why do I say trees bring more harm than help in Singapore?

1. Trees may fall and hurt someone, or damage someone's hard-earned property.

2. And even if fallen trees do not hit anything, they can become obstruction of the traffic, hence causing jams and potential accidents.

3. Trees bring about birds, and birds do shit. Do you want your car to be covered in bird shit when you need to go meet an important business associate?

4. And even if you aren't too concerned about beauty and image purposes, bird shit brings about potential health hazards!

5. Leaves, branches, seeds, fruits and other bio-substances from trees messes up the urban environment. They can be a real pain when they land on your car, or worse, on your head... Though they are not chemicals and hence not deadly, they are considered "trash" and hence need to cleared off the streets.

6. Singapore has a shortage of water supply. She even have to buy water from her big neighbor Malaysia! Instead of building more canals and water catchment areas, having millions more trees which also consume water (hence competing with people) seems like a REALLY "bright" idea.

Ok now, all these problems can be solved by road sweepers and maintences, but can you imagine the amount of manpower, time, effort and money to put into all these?

For God's sake, use the money to set up a social security net for the poor and needy instead of spending tons of money each year trying to import, plant and maintain the damn trees! Allocate your manpower to do more constructive things than to sweep leaves and remove botanical debris!

It's good to have a small quantity of trees in the city, for larger quantity, please leave them in the parks. For big ass quantity, leave them in the damn forest!
